Hey everyone! I have the cutest Axel skirt hack to share with you today. I’m calling it my “flippy mini skirt”…. because I don’t know what else to call it, ha! Basically, its the View A handkerchief view, but wit the handkerchief hem cut off (and a few extra tweaks). The result is a shorter skirt, still fitted through the hips, but with a little flippy flared hem right at the end. Gah, so cute! Wanna see how I did it?

Start with the handkerchief skirt pattern piece for View A

Using a long ruler, draw a straight horizontal line from one corner to the other.

Find the center of this line, and draw down 1″(2.5cm) at this point.

Connect this lowered center point back to the two corners using a curved ruler.

Cut along this curved line.

This is what the pattern looks like at this point.

Now we need to change the shape at the points so that excess fabric is not hanging down below the hem. NOTE: these next couple measurements were what I found to work best for my size (0). I wasn’t able to test it out on other sizes. So it may be wise to do a toile and adjust these measurements and cut as needed.
Along the side, I measured and marked 4″(10cm) from the corner.

Along the bottom edge, I measured and marked 9″(23cm) from the corner.

Connect these two points with a curved line as shown, making a smooth transition to the bottom edge.

Cut along this curved line.

Repeat on the other corner on the other side.

This is the finished pattern piece!

Cut out 4 skirt pieces from your fabric, and follow the sewing instructions for View A. You can find the step by step instructions here, if you need help.

Sew the four seams…

… then attach the waistband.

For the hem, it should be a circular shape, instead of the square shape of the original handkerchief. So no need to worry about corners! You can hem the entire edge in one go. Remember that the hem allowance is 1/2″(1.2cm) and only turned under once.

And as mentioned on the View A post, as well as the other versions, its recommended to use a fusible hem tape, it makes it so much easier! See it used here.

And this is how it turned out! See, cute right?! I made this one in a brushed athletic knit. Soft and drapey, but also plenty of stretch and structure.
