Axel Alteration : Removing View B Centre Seam

How to remove the centre seam from View B

Hello friends! I debated even making this Axel skirt hack a tutorial – it’s so simple, and pretty self explanatory. But I want to make sure everyone, including the newest, most beginner of sewists, understands basic alterations that can be made to patterns. And the easiest, most simple alteration that can be made to Axel, is removing the centre seam! Now, this can really only be done to View B, and one side of View C. It’s not possible with View A with the handkerchief shape.

As I said, this is the easiest of easy pattern alterations, and any one can do it! Here, let me show you.

So here is the skirt pattern for View B. The seam allowance is 1/4″(6mm). So all you need to do is measure and draw a line 1/4″(3mm) away from the centre front/centre back.

** If you have the older print of Axel, the one with lettered sizing instead of numerical, the seam allowance is 5/8″(1.5cm). So draw your line 5/8″(1.5cm) from the centre front/back.

You can choose to cut along this line if you’d like. Or, like I did here, just fold it back along this line. That way, you can still use the pattern with the seam line of you’d like, by just unfolding it again.

That’s it! No need to make any adjustments to the waistband. See what I mean by the easiest adjustment ever?

You can eliminate the seam on both sides (front and back), or just one side!

Here is my sample sewn up. I eliminated the centre seam on one side, shown. And you can’t see it, but I kept the centre seam on the other side.

For View C, you can do the same exact thing, but ONLY on the skirt piece labeled ‘skirt back’. That is the one without the angled slit. With the way View C is constructed, you need the centre seam for the side with the slit.
