The Best Thing I Have Ever Worn

Photos by Andrea & Veronika, thank you darlings!!

So this is what i wore to the Texas Style Council Posh Party. I think this might be the best thing i’ve ever worn!  Bar this dress, obviously. There’s really nowhere I can go from here, except downhill. hehehe kidding. Seriously though, I am really really in love with all these pieces together!

I’m so thrilled that I finished this skirt a few weeks before I left for Texas! It’s really been a labour of love. Sometimes when I buy fabric it’s for a specific project, but sometimes I buy fabric because it’s just too special to pass up. This fabric was one i just couldn’t pass up. It’s a gold and black silk brocade, and it was calling my name. I bought it 5 years ago when Chris and I were in Paris, at the Marche Saint-Pierre, which is one of the best fabric stores i’ve ever been too. I fell in love with it, but had no idea what to use it for. I just knew it had to come home with me. So it sat neatly folded until a few months ago when Casey made a black brocade circle skirt – and that’s when i knew what i wanted to do with it!

Oh yeah, and I added pockets. I really can’t help myself – i’m addicted to pockets. At this point it’s like i really can’t live without them. I was very tempted to make the skirt reversible because the wrong side of the fabric is actually really really pretty too – but in the end the thought of pockets won, and I just lined the skirt with black china silk instead.

Sunni was kind enough to send me some really fabulous horsehair braid from her wonderful sewing supplies store (which also stocks my patterns, by the way) – i totally recommend her store, she is a sweetheart and sells a lot of hard to find notions/supplies. Anyway, the horsehair braid is what gives the skirt that amazing body. It’s amazing stuff! I love how it has a similar effect to wearing an crinoline, you know, without having to wear the giant petticoat! My one regret is that I got reallllly tired of handsewing the horsehair braid in, and kind of rushed towards the end – leaving a slightly visible line in the back of the skirt. Maybe I’m the only one who’ll notice? I am pretty critical of my own work… i can’t help it, I like things to be perfect.

Oh and do you like my new necklace? I nabbed it from Merl’s store before I left – and it is quite the statement piece. She is such a talented jewellery designer, it’s not even funny. Though if I keep up this adoration for her designs I will soon be broke… whatever, its worth it. I do after all love pretty things hehehe

So there you are. I think this is my favourite outfit ever, it was perfect for the party and I really can’t wait to wear all the individually pieces in different ways!

That skirt is so beautiful! I love that you added the pockets and gave it the look of having a crinoline. I always want all of my skirts to have such wonderful body to them! So pretty. =)

I love the skirt and I love ideas of what to do with brocade fabric as I have some great teal and gold brocade in the stash that I love but I’m not quite sure what to do with.

It is a beautiful brocade and as a circle skirt it is witty and unexpected. It’s such a cute skirt to wear with that lace top – I have a few lace t-shirts and I never know what to pair them with – pardon me if I take a page out of your book!

I am waaay behind the 8 ball! First and foremost, you look incredible! Not to say that this is not always the case, but this might be my favorite of your more “dressy” outfits! Second, i love how I always learn something new and interesting about clothing construction when I come to your site. This time, it was the horsehair braid, which I may or may not have envisioned in the literal sense until I clicked the link – lesson learned!
