What should you include in a beginner sewing kit? Never fear I’ve got you covered! I made the Ultimate Beginner Sewing Kit for my daughter Birdie, and i’ll walk you through everything I included. Birdie has been sewing so much over the last year and it’s been wonderful to see her enjoying herself. Even though I have encouraged her to use my sewing supplies whenever she likes, I’ve noticed she seemed quite hesitant to just start pulling drawers open, and sometimes looked a little lost trying to find what she wanted. So I thought it was time I put together a sewing kit for her of her very own supplies. That way when she wants to sew she can pull out her basket and get to work!
It’s been such a success so far and an absolute joy to see how much she has enjoyed having her own tools. Her favourite thing is to pull out my scrap baskets and hand sew clothing for her dolls. Given that was my entry into sewing as well, you can imagine how happy it makes me to see her spending her time this way.
If you’d like to try putting together your own ultimate beginner sewing kit, here is a list of all the items I included.

The Ultimate Beginner Sewing Kit
- Sewing Basket (Hers is Gutermann brand, but there are so many pretty ones out there!)
- Pins (my preference is glass or silicone head pins as they don’t melt if accidentally ironed)
- A seam ripper
- Chalk pencils
- Easy needle threaders if you struggle to thread needles
- Measuring tape
- Safety pins
- Empty bobbins for your machine sewing
- Pincushion Jar (here is a tutorial for how you can make your own)
- Needles for hand sewing
- Fabric sheers
- Thread snips
- Embroidery scissors
- Thread spools
