Hi my favourite makers! Today I’m going to show you how to make a pin cushion from a mason jar! I have made so many of these over the last decade and they are as aesthetic as they are functional. This will help keep your pins all in one place, or you can make it as a handmade gift! If you choose a larger jar you could fill it with other notions and tools and it would make the perfect container for a sewing kit for any maker – beginner or experienced :)
I made this pincushion jar for my youngest daughter so that she can keep her pins on top within easy reach, and her needles safely in the jar where no-one can get stabbed.
The supplies you’ll need are:
- A mason canning jar with a 2 part lid
- A small piece of scrap fabric – I’m using this lovely yellow and white gingham linen that my daughter chose.
- A handful of polyfill stuffing
- Cardboard or felt
- A hot glue gun
- Scissors
Here’s how you do it…..
Cut a piece of cardboard (or felt) slightly smaller than the rubber ring on the inside of your lid. This is important so that you can easily close your lid later. Then cut a piece of fabric fairly larger than your lid – about 1” bigger or so.
With the fabric and lid both face down, sandwich a chunk of stuffing in between the two.
While lightly pressing down on your lid – fold, tuck, and glue your fabric around the lid. It’s important that you glue inside the rubber seal or it will be hard to close later. I like to secure two opposite ends first, to ensure that the tension is even. Make sure you are getting it nice and tight, and not leaving too much excess around the edge.
Your cardboard or felt is going to be used as a backing to simply cover up the unfinished edges and give it a clean finished look. So add a little glue, and attach your backing, making sure it’s centred nicely.
Apply hot glue to the inside edge of the lid ring, and push the pincushion through the top so that the two are securely stuck together.
Screw the pincushion lid on your jar and you are done!
