Time to finish up our Marri camisoles! The cami version has a facing finish with a cute little side vent slits. It’s a really fun touch, so let me show you how its done!
Let’s start with the back. So grab your Cami Hem Back Facing.
While we will be sewing the facing to the garment with right sides together, because of the slit seam allowance, I find it easier to start with the garment inside out. So that the wrong side of the fabric is facing you (back up the cam facing up).
Flip up the bottom of the garment so now you can see the right side of the fabric.
Place your back hem facing onto your back bodice, with right sides together. Line up the corners, hem notches and all the raw edges.
You’ll be sewing the back facing to the back bodice as shown above. Along the short ends, starting at the hem notch, you will sew 5/8″(1.5cm) from the raw edge. along the long hem edge 1/4″(3mm) from the raw edge.
Here is a better look at the 1/4″(3mm) inch along the long hem edge, and 5/8″(1.5cm) along the short edges, stopping at the notch.
From the other side (the back bodice side), you can see how that short side stitching should line right up to the stitching of the side seam.
Now lets do the same exact thing with the from hem facing.
Start with the garment inside out. and the front of the cami facing you. Flip up the bottom of the garment so now you can see the right side of the fabric.
Place your front hem facing onto your front bodice, with right sides together. Line up the corners, hem notches and all the raw edges.
Just like with the back, you’ll be sewing the fron facing to the front bodice as shown above. Along the short ends, starting at the hem notch, you will sew 5/8″(1.5cm) from the raw edge. along the long hem edge 1/4″(6mm) from the raw edge.
Here is what it looks like once both facings are sewn on.
See the remaining length of the facing side seams on each end?
Just place together with right sides of the fabric together, and sew 5/8″(1.5cm) from the raw edge.
That short row of stitching should line up with the stitching you did before when attaching the facings.
Now clip all four corners of the facings.
Press each facing side seam open.
At the raw edge of the facing, turn under 3/8″(1cm) towards the wrong side.
Turn the hem facings the right way around, towards the inside of the garment, shaping the corners as needed. Press well.
This is what we’re looking at now!
The last step is to sew all along the facing, close to folded edge, as shown above.
And here is what it looks like from the front, with those cute little side slits!
