It’s that time of a release where we start to get very excited about an incoming sewalong! Exciting times friends! Before we jump into all of the tips and tricks to make your Marri dress or cami, today’s post will take you through a whole heap of inspiration to get your mind ticking over for your very own make. Let’s take a look at just how versatile this pattern is!
Options, options, options! When Marri was being designed the number one request from our team was to please make it able to be layered with other patterns and other items from our wardrobe. One pattern, perhaps even one dress all of a sudden can be a comfy skirt in summer with a tank over the top or a t-shirt underneath, a cosy dress for winter days with a turtleneck underneath and a cosy cardi over the top and a simple silk slip could double under your favourite sheer dress and as your favourite nightie! Layer up!
One of the easiest ways top mix up your Marri make is to add some beautiful unique details. The silhouette of the camisole and dress is so simple and chic it really is beautiful on it’s own – but it’s also a wonderful canvas to add some flourish of your own. Some lace around the neckline and hem adds a romantic touch. Creating shoestring straps to tie small bows is a cute addition or make a rope tie to cinch your waist. You could even add some ric rac around the neckline or hem to create a beautiful feature edging!
Where shall we put the hem or the seam today? Drop waist, empire waist, tiers, cropped, long line…the options for where to cut your top/dress and hem or and join your pattern pieces are endless! Here’s a few tips on mixing up top/skirt options!
- Try using the Marri facings as the bodice for a high waisted sundress. Combine with a gathered skirt like the one from our Protea sewing pattern!
- Add a gathered skirt to the Marri Cami hemline for a dropwaist sundress.
- Are you a fan of peplums? Add a narrow gathered rectangle to the Marri facing to make a peplum top!
- You could even try adding a skirt to the bodice join line
One of the main design inspirations for Marri was a simple silk slip, one that can be layered under a top/dress as an ‘undergarment’ essentially or one that can be worn as a chic night gown. We quickly realised the pattern can do so much more than that! BUT…it can also be used in the way it was originally intended! Pick a fabric that you want to spend hours in (think soft linen, silk or cotton) and a colour that makes you happy or sleepy or calm and use Marri to make the perfect, beautiful, elegant and comfortable nightie/loungewear/pj top!
Marri is designed to work best with light to medium weight shirt or dress fabrics, our favourites being silk, linen and cotton. But there is almost no limit to the variation you’re able to create with a variation on colour, weight or print. A linen Marri is perfect for a summers day, coverup or nightie; a chambray Marri would be amazing in winter layered over tights and a turtleneck. Use your imagination and go wild!
