It’s been almost three years since I started working exclusively from home again after closing the Megan Nielsen Studio, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to share a little tour of my workspace with you! So without further ado here is a little 2025 Workroom Tour!
When I closed the studio there were two things I was desperate to keep. One was my large workbench, which now sits on my patio outside as an outdoor workspace. The second was this massive custom pegboard wall that my dad made for me with his CNC machine. I loved it too much to part with it and so we brought it home. The original pegboard was made of 3 panels which didn’t fit in my home office. So instead I put up 2 of the pegboard panels on the wall of my workspace and the third panel I installed outside next to my workbench and we use it to store outdoor things like plants, skipping ropes and pizza oven accessories.
It’s so convenient and I absolutely love having all my tools within easy reach, neatly organised and up off my workspace.
I am still using my spool storage rack that I have had for over 15 years. I mounted it in exactly the same way i always have – just with some 3M hooks. They have gotten a big bashed around over the years and so two of the dowels are broken and one rack is a little wonky. I took the easy way when fixing it, and just used elastic bands to hold the two racks together and keep everything straight.
I really liked the way we stored the patterns in their own boxes in the studio as it made it so much easier when picking and packing Aussie orders, so I decided to keep that storage solution. The majority of my orders ship from my main warehouse in the USA, and I just keep a small amount of stock with me in Perth for shipping to my Aussie customers. Each pattern has it’s own little box- all of which were originally purchased at Ikea and are made of cardboard. They no longer sell them in this size, but it’s somehow perfect for sewing patterns! The shelving is the Ikea Fjalkinge – i had three of these in the studio, and kept just this one which fits really well in this little corner.
This workroom does triple duty. During the day one side of the room is my workspace, the other side is Chris’ workspace and in the middle we have a couch with tv hidden in the cabinets. In the evening it’s where Chris and I can watch tv together after putting the kids to bed, as our main lounge is too open plan for watching tv when they are asleep.
I really love my new corner desk! My dad made it for me from plywood, and I love how it fits perfectly in the room maximizing all the space i have available. I whitewashed the desk like I did the plywood pegboard wall, but as the plywood we used was a bit more red tinged than the plywood wall, it ended up looking quite pink. I kept adding more and more whitewash layers in an attempt to fix that and ended up with a very light baby pink desk. I must admit, i kind of like it even though it wasn’t the original plan!
