If you’re making your Cascade skirt in a lightweight fabric, especially a lightweight fabric that may be a little sheer, you might want to add a lining. And we got you covered! You simply use the same skirt pattern pieces that you used for your main skirt, and we’ll cover the steps below. Let’s go!
For a fully lined skirt you will need to cut the skirt Front and the skirt Back out of lining fabric as well.
The same way you assembled your main skirt, sew your side seams (either standard seam or french seam. just remember the seam allowance is 5/8″).
Before you hem your lining, you may want to consider making it a little shorter than your main fabric. That way the lining doesn’t peek out when you are wearing it. You could cut your lining a size or two smaller when cutting out your fabric, or you can just trim off the bottom edge afterwards, like I did here. How much shorter you make it is up to you. I trimmed off about 3/4″.
Also, don’t forget to let your skirt lining hang for 24 hours before hemming, just like your main skirt.
After your skirt lining has hung and has been adjusted, hem the bottom edge in the same manner that your hemmed your main skirt. We shared two methods to do a rolled hem in this sewalong, if you need help!
Now lay our main skirt with wrong side of the fabric facing up.
Place the lining on top with wring side facing up, as well. So that the side seams line up and the raw edges of the waistline are aligned.
NOTE : If you chose to trim back your hemline, then you lining will be slightly shorter at the waistline than the main skirt. It should still align at the side seams, but will be smaller at the edge of the hem.
Pin in place along the waistline and Sew 5/8” from the raw edge, through both layers of fabric. From this point onwards the two layers are treated as one.
