Cascade Sewalong : Button Waistband

We’ve already gone over the tie waistband version of the Cascade skirt, so today lets cover the other waistband option – the button waistband!

First, we need to staystitch our waistline. Just stitch along the entire waistline, 5/8″ from the raw edge.

Then clip along the waistline seam allowance – snipping as close to the staystitching as you can without cutting through it. This will allow you to lay your skirt flat to attache the waistband.

P.S – Too many clips will weaken the fabric, but too few won’t allow it to conform to the waistband correctly. Clipping 1/2″ to 1″ apart is best.

This method for a button up waistband requires only one waistband piece, and also one piece cut from interfacing.

Attach the interfacing to the wrong side of the waistband.

Now take your skirt and lay it down flat with right side of the fabric facing up. As you can see, the clipping in to the staystitching allows the waistband to lay flat. Mark the center back of your skirt.

Place the waistband on the skirt with right sides together. Make sure that the center back of the skirtis aligned with the halfway point of the waistband.

Now flip your skirt back over so the right side of the fabric is up.

Fold the waistband widthways with right sides together, lining up the folded edge with the seam line. Pin in place.

Sew along the short edges of the waistband, 5/8″ from the raw edge. Your line of sewing should begin in line with the edge of the skirt, but should not catch the skirt in the seam.

Clip the corners and trim the seam allowance.

Repeat on the other side of the waistband.

Turn the waistband the right way round, and press.

With your waistband seam allowance pressed up, it should now be enclosed by the waistband.

To finish enclosing the waistband, you can either topstitch on the waistband from the right side of the fabric, close to the seam line, and making sure that it catches the fabric on the wrong side. Or you can stitch in the ditch.

Or from the inside, you can do a handstitch (like an invisible slipstitch) to close it.

Sew horizontal button holes on the right hand side of the waistband, using the button hole guide on the waistband pattern piece.

Sew buttons in the corresponding positions on the left hand side of the waistband.

Would it be feasable to make the button holes before attaching to the waistband? My buttonhole maker on my sewing machine occasionally fails me and it makes me nervous but I love the idea of this rather than tying in a bow

You absolutely could! You would just need to make sure that you have enough clearance to sew your waistband on – but i honestly think you would be fine :)
