This matching pajama set for Birdie was a total accident and it makes me so happy! Sometimes my kids just don’t like what I make, and that’s absolutely fine. Many years ago when i was developing the Mini Briar sewing pattern I made quite a few Mini Briar’s for Bunny to test the pattern. Some she absolutely loved, and some she just didn’t and as a result never wore. But I hate waste, so I put them in a box and waited to see if perhaps Buddy or Birdie would like any of them later.
The year before last when winter hit we did what we do every season and pulled out the box of grown out of things to check if there was anything Birdie wanted. She pulled out these Mini Hudson track pants that used to be Buddy’s and this Mini Briar sweater that was rejected by Bunny, and declared “yay new pajamas!”. Looking at these photos now, I just can’t believe how much she has grown in the last 2 years.
I couldn’t help but laugh and feel so pleased! Though I did use the same fabric to make these, as I made them for two different kids, I guess I never expected these two pieces to be worn together. But turns out they are a perfect set and she absolutely loves them! These photos are from two years ago and she has grown a lot since then, but she she is still trying to wear this set this year. I might need to disappear them when summer comes haha.
I’ve used this fabric so much that I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t ended up on the blog more. I love using french terry for my kids, and before I discovered the joy that is See You At Six french terry, I struggled to find any. So when one season Potter & Co had a lovely soft french terry in stock I bought 5m in all four colours. I know that might sound excessive, but remember I have 3 kids – and I kid you not, i used all of it and none is left. The funny thing is that my kids ended up with specific garments they loved, so as they grew out of them I was able to replace them with the exact same garment just in a size bigger. I’m sneaky like that. Maybe I can get away with it again this time ;)
We really value handmade clothing in our family, and I love that my kids have grown up respecting the work that goes into making something. I’m so grateful that there isn’t anyone in my family that hates a hand me down, and it’s so wonderful to see the things I’ve made getting used over and over again! I often feel upset with myself because there are so many things I want to make for my kids, but I don’t end up making them all. But knowing that each piece is so appreciated really helps ground my perspective, and shift it from making more, to appreciating what we have.
