I love having pretty cushions on my couches. My kids however, love throwing those cushions on the floor so they sit on them when they are playing Nintendo, doing puzzles or reading. As you can imagine, I don’t particularly love couch cushions ending up on the floor, and I have a sneaking suspicion this might be an issue in every home. So last year I decided it was time to find a solution to make everyone happy. Enter floor cushions!
When I closed the studio i had this gorgeous bolt of japanese heavy weight cotton that for reasons i can’t understand no-one bought. That turned out to be lucky for me, because it was the perfect fabric for this project, i love the design and i had it in my stash. When the sewing stars align i always feel so satisfied!
I bought four very large 26″x 26″ (65cm x 65cm)cushion inserts from Ikea, and made very simple envelope slip covers for them. This was such a quick and easy sew that I really was questioning why I hadn’t thought of doing it in the past.
If I was to make these again my one change would be to add some button or snap closures. I purposefully didn’t use zips as i didn’t want my floors to get scratched and also don’t have much faith in zips in high pressure situations like kids stomping and jumping ;)
We store them in a nice little stack in our TV cabinet, ready to be pulled out and enjoyed. When they inevitably get dirty i just throw them in the wash and then we are good to go again.
These have been so well loved in our family, and I can’t believe how many ways the kids find to use them. They even end up outside on the nest swing and as a squishy floor for cubby houses and forts!
