Let’s get started on the construction of our Kelly skirts, shall we? First up, we have the pockets and side seams!
Start by placing one of your pocket linings on top of the corresponding front skirt piece, with right sides together.
Line up along the pocket opening and pin in place.
Sew 5/8″ (1.5 cm) from the raw edge around the pocket opening.
Clip the seam allowance on the raw edge.
Pick up the pocket lining and flip towards the inside of the skirt/wrong side of the fabric.
Press the pocket opening flat, so now the wrong sides of the fabric are facing each other and the raw edge is enclosed.
Topstitch 1/2″ (1.3cm) from the edge of the pocket opening.
Here is the topstitching from the right side of the skirt.
Now open up the pocket and skirt so they are both laying flat with right sides facing up.
Place the pocket facing on the pocket lining with right sides together, so that the curved edges match up. Pin in place.
Stitch around the curved edge 5/8″ (1.5cm) from the outer edge.
Finish the raw edge with your preferred method.
Flip the pocket facing back towards the inside of the skirt piece and press flat.
You may choose to use a long baste stitch to secure the pocket to the skirt at the top and side edge.
Repeat for the other side.
And here is what it looks like from the wrong side.
Lay the two skirt front pieces down so that the right sides are facing upwards.
Place the skirt back on top so that the right sides are facing each other and so that the side seams match up.
Sew the skirt fronts to the skirt back using a seam allowance of 5/8″ (1.5cm).
Finish the raw edges with your preferred method, and then press the seam either open or towards the skirt back.
Optional: You may choose to topstitch 1/8″ (0.3cm) from the seam along the side seams of the skirt.
