Reef Sewalong: Shorts Pockets

Reef Sewalong Shorts pockets

Let’s get started on the Reef Shorts! We’ll be getting started on the shorts pockets today. I’ll be showing you View B in this post, but you’ll be able to follow along with the same steps for View C.

Lay the short front with right sides facing up.

Lay the short front with right sides facing up. Place the front curved hem on top with right sides together. Match up the notches. Sew 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge.

Next, lay the shorts back with right sides facing up.

Next, lay the shorts back with right sides facing up. Place the back curved hem on top with right sides together. Match up the notches and sew 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge. Press the seams down towards the hemline. Repeat for the other back pieces.

Finish the raw edges of the pockets.

Finish the raw edges of the pockets. I serged mine, but you may also use a zigzag stitch. Note: I use washi tape on my pattern pieces to distinguish right from wrong sides of the fabric.

Place the pockets on the shorts front and shorts back with right sides together.

Sew 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge at the side seams.

Under stitch just under 1/8” (3mm) from the seam between the pocket notches on the pocket and side seam.

Next, take the short front and short back and place them right sides together.

Match up the pockets and side seams. Sew along the side seam from the waistline down to the first pocket notch and over to the edge of the side seam. Then sew up from the hemline to the second pocket notch over to the side seam. Be sure that you don’t sew the shorts together between the two notches, as this will be the pocket opening!

Sew 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge around the pocket edge until you reach the side seam.

Press the pockets and seams towards the centre front and stay stitch 1/2” (1.2cm) from the raw edge along the waistline.

We now have pockets!

We now have pockets! We will stop here for today and continue sewing the shorts together in the next post.
