This is it! Today we will finish our Reef Shorts and complete our set by going through how to sew the shorts hem! Note: I will be showing you View B as View C is a simple hem turned 1/4” (6mm) twice and stitched.
First, let’s work on the hem facings. Place front and back hem facing pieces right sides together. Sew the side seams 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge. Press the seams open.
Fold 5/8” (1.5cm) along the top straight edge of the facing and press.
Place the hem facing over the hem of the shorts with right sides together.
Sew along the hemline with 1/4” (6mm) seam allowance.
Clip into the corner along the seam line and notch along the hemline. You may also use pinking shears.
Understitch along the hemline facing, just under 1/8” (3mm) from the hemline seam.
Turn the hem facing towards the inside of the garment and press. Be sure to pin the pockets out of the way when sewing this step. You may hand sew the hem facing closed at the seam line or topstitch next to the seam line from the right side. I topstitched mine in the photo below. Note: Be sure to catch the hem facing on the inside of your shorts when topstitching.
And that’s it! We’ve completed both the Reef Camisole and Shorts! Now you can enjoy wearing your beautiful Reef set!
Happy Sewing!
