This year Buddy wins the prize for the easiest Book Week costume! I must admit after making quite detailed costumes for my girls and I was so grateful to Buddy for choosing something that was pretty easy to create in an afternoon and honestly could be done quicker if you’re a better shopper than I am. I can’t wait to show you how we put together this super easy Calvin and Hobbes costume (which he’ll also be using for Halloween).
Buddy has been really into Calvin and Hobbes recently due to this very loved book of comics from the school library. One day while eating breakfast last week he announced his Calvin and Hobbes plan which included mostly things he already had. Here are the components:
- Red shirt with black stripes
- Black shorts
- Sneakers
- Tiger stuffed toy
- Yellow hairspray
He pulled out numbers 2-5, but we didn’t yet have a striped tee, but that sounded easy enough to me.
Though I struggled to find a black and red striped tee or black and red striped fabric – I decided it would be pretty easy to just buy a red shirt and paint some stripes on. So i ordered a plain red tee from AS Colour when i ordered Birdies (it’s going to sound like I’m sponsored, but I’m not, they just have nice plain tees and I’m a tired mum lol).
When it arrived I marked out the stripes with masking tape and then used the same block printing ink that I used for The Paw costume. It was super easy. There are some wobbly bits but Buddy reckons that makes it look more like a hand drawn cartoon. Gotta love an easy to please kid!
Once i was done painting i heat set the whole tee with an iron and we were good to go! How easy is that?!
Obviously we had to do some recreations of the comics! Oh Hobbes you’re always surprising poor Calvin in the sandpit!
Nothing like taking your mate for a ride on your shoulders… that is until he jumps on you again.
Hobbes is incorrigable!
The best thing about this Calvin & Hobbes costume – beyond the fact that Buddy loves it – is that this is just a normal tee that will slip right into his everyday wardrobe. I love a costume that can be used more than once!
