Next up on our Opal pants and shorts sewalong are the seams! That includes side seams, crotch seams, and inseam (if you did the inseam pockets, you’ve already sewn the side seams, but if you did the patch pockets, you haven’t. So I’ll go over it quickly before we move on to the rest of the seams). And just a note – I’ll be showing you these seams of the shorts just because its easier to fit in frame for photos, but it is exactly the same for the pants – just longer seams! Ok, lets get to it…
// side seams //
(Again, if you did inseam pockets, this part is already done. If you did front patch pockets, this is for you)…
Place a front leg and back leg right sides together.
Line up the side seam, match up notches, and sew 5/8″ (1.5cm) from the raw edge.
Finish the raw edge with your preferred method, and press the seam either towards the back or open.
Repeat for the other front and back leg.
// crotch seams //
Everyone joins in again at this point, so inseam pocket people, tune back in! Open one leg and place it in front of you with right side facing up.
Open the other leg and place it down on top, so the right sides of the fabric are facing each other.
Line up the front and back crotch seams and match the notches. Pin in place to hold, and sew 5/8″ (1.5cm) from the raw edge along both the front and back crotch.
Finish the raw edges with your preferred method. Press the seams either open or to the side.
// inseam //
Now open the pants/shorts so that the two front legs are next to each other, and the two back legs are next to each other.
Still with right sides together, line up the inseam, matching up the centre front and centre back crotch seams together.
Pin in place, and sew along the inseam 5/8″ (1.5cm) from the raw edge.
Finish the raw edge with your preferred method, and press the seam either open or towards the back. All the seams are now done!
