In search of a plus size fit model in Perth

My dears, i’m coming to the end of a frustrating hunt and I need some help. For months and months I’ve been working on adding more sizes to my patterns. The problem is that I cannot go any further without a plus size fit model in my base size. I’ve been through every agency in town (only to be pointed to models many sizes smaller than I requested), hunted down plus size models on social media (because apparently i’m a stalker now) only to find out they’ve moved somewhere else. Sigh. The problem is, that as we all know, the fashion industry is a little broken, and how models are cast is often quite different to what their real sizing is. Plus, I live in Perth, and as much as i love this town deeply, it’s not the fashion capital of Australia, our pool is small and girls looking for opportunities often move to the East Coast. Please excuse me whilst i go scream into a pillow in frustration.

I know from many years in this business how crucial a fit model is. A fit model is a person who is used by a designer to check the fit and overall look of a design on a real person. They are vital, I wouldn’t feel comfortable going forward with any design that wasn’t fitted to my current size range fit model, so can’t image trying to extend my sizing without the appropriate model.

So I’m turning to you, and I’m hoping that if I post what I’m looking forward to, then someone may know someone who may be just the gal i’m looking for.

I’m so excited to hear you are expanding your sizes! I love a lot of your patterns but the only one I have gotten motivated to grade up is the darling ranges (which I love, but it was a bit of work and like you say above, it would definitely fit better with a new draft for plus sizes). Unfortunately I’m in the US, but would definitely be interested in pattern testing if it gets to that point! Someone has already posted this to the curvy sewing collective facebook page so hopefully you will have luck finding someone. Good luck!

Megan I wonder if it would help to contact the guidance department in your local high schools to find out if they know of a plus sized teen that wants to go into modelling? They learn fast, would give you a young person’s perspective (your patterns are young looking and very fashion forward) and they have time to pop by fairly often to see you, try things on, and wear the things to school where they would have access to lots of other female opinions :) Just a thought.

I have forwarded your link to a friend in Perth in the film industry, she may know someone. I fit the sizing, but I am in Melbourne. Not sure how much you could do via Skype. If I can help, please let me know. Hope you find someone.

Thank you for thinking of expanding your sizes! I am “oldish” but love your designs and would love to wear them. In the right fabrics they can work for every age. I’m a plus size (14-16) Canadian and am really happy about this development. Grading up is such a pain that I tend to buy from designers who have at least designed for various cup sizes.

I am very happy to hear that you are considering plus-size patterns! And desperately hoping that you will make a plus size version of your Dove Blouse. I ADORE it…but at size 22 with a 150 hip (eeeeeepp), I am well out of your current size range!!
