grey for days

Grey for days // Megan Nielsen Axel skirt (V2) in dark grey cotton ponte knit

I have noticed a definite trend in my recent making. Grey. So much grey. I was shocked but not disappointed when i noticed that. And then like a freak who constantly overanalyses everything, i couldn’t stop thinking about it. And then I decided i was ok with grey. I feel like grey is the new neutral for me. As much as i love print and pretty colours, I find that what I am wanting more and more in my wardrobe are pieces that go with everything. Pieces that can be thrown together in 2 minutes before i have to run out the door with my little ones. Neutrals are winning my every day wearability challenge. Maybe it’s part of, dare i say, maturing? One of the things I have loved (and sometimes hated) about blogging my designs over years, is seeing how my style has evolved as i have grown. I’m still me, but I can see how I’ve evolved, and I do like it.

For example, I still love the designs from my first ready to wear collection, they are so special to me, and still part of my identity, and yet i must admit – I don’t wear any of them anymore. They belong to a slightly different version of me. Younger I guess, and in a different stage of life. At the beginning of the journey to finding out who i was as a designer.

I think that’s ok. It’s part of growing as a designer and as a person to constantly change and evolve and find new inspiration as time goes on, after all you never want to stagnate. I’m 31 with three little kids and a business, I don’t need to be the same girl i was at 24, even though i did like her.

I’m not really sure how i got there from grey… but i guess that’s how my mind rambles! On to the project at hand shall we?

SO this is an Axel skirt V2, in a dark grey ponte knit from KnitWit. I love this fabric and i’m going back for more! As with all of the Axel skirts i make for myself, i graded from a Small at the waist to a Medium at the hip for my pear shape. This is probably my most worn Axel right now, possibly because of it’s magical abilities to hide that i just ate a giant donut behind the waist ties hehe. This was a date night out with Chris, but usually i’m more likely to pair it with lifestyle sneakers and a crop top or Maker tee for the school run and hanging out my kiddos.

And here we are back to maturing. Full circle my dears!

I think everybody’s style changes over the years and that’s great, even if I’m in a strange can’t decide what I like phase, I look in my wardrobe and can’t find what to wear, spend ages looking at fabric not finding anything that’s right but I really don’t know what im looking for. Stylish but practical, chic but casual, smart but comfy, not asking for much :)!! The patterns are the easy bit, I wish we had a mood here or a big fabric market as my choice is limited but I’m sure it will start to fall into place. You’ve found your place which is right for you, how boring would staying the same be!

Looking at your beautiful skirt I had a profound insight :) I love it and I realized while making a navy ponte knit skirt that is about the same length as yours shown here that I REALLY need to take it in. It needs to fit nice and snug to the body b/c there is essentially no drape to this knit. Thank you! I haven’t gotten so far into it that cutting off a good piece will not be so difficult. I love gray too and have noticed I’ve been buying more and more of it. It sets off bright colours so well like red, peach and aqua even better than black.

Grey is the perfect colour for A/W. It goes with both navy and black, is enhanced by red and burgundy, looks great with pink and is an elegant choice.
