Today i’ll be showing you how to attached flared sleeve cuffs on the Dove blouse! If you’ve ever sewn a circle skirt, you’ll be pleased to know that this is a really similar process.
The Dove blouse includes two statement sleeve cuffs. Version 2 is a gently flared cuff and Version 3 is a full blown bell sleeve. But thankfully, even though the shape of the V2 cuff and V3 cuff are different, the construction is exactly the same.
Also worth mentioning (if you’re the kind of person who likes to sew patterns in a different order than shown) that there is nothing stopping you from putting these sleeves together first before you do the main body of the blouse, it’s up to you!
Ok ready to get started on your cuffs?
Stay stitch 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge along the Cuff. Note that i used a short clip to mark my notch. You can use a different mark if you find it clearer – a notch, pencil, fabric pen, or tailors chalk would all suffice.
Clip along seamline in 1” (2.5cm) to 2” (5cm) intervals, being careful not to cut through the stitches.
Lay the Sleeves down with right sides facing outwards. Place the Cuffs on top with right sides facing each other, so that the raw edges of the elbow seam are together, and the notches line up.
Sew 5/8” (1.5cm) from the raw edge along the cuff seam.
Finish the raw edges as desired and press down towards the cuff.
Fold the sleeves in half with right sides facing each other and sew ?” (1.5cm) from the raw edge.
Neaten the raw edge using either a serger/overlocker or zig zag stitch, and press either open or towards the back.
Turn the sleeve right side out, and turn the blouse wrong side out.
Now you’re ready to set the sleeves – which is what i’ll be showing you in the Dove blouse tutorial!
This tutorial won’t just be applicable to the Dove blouse pattern, it will be a great refresher for you on how to set sleeves in any garment.
