Should I Make Sewing Patterns?

I have to admit, I’m a little nervous about writing this post.

I’ve been getting a lot of queries recently about whether I will start selling the sewing patterns for the designs that are a part of my collections. Actually, I’ve been getting those questions since I launched my line last year, but the sheer number in the last few months has got me thinking hard about whether its a good idea.

Up until now, I’ve just been saying no as I’ve been focusing on my clothing line – but i’m starting to reconsider. So my question to you is, what do you think? Would you like to be able to purchase the patterns for the pieces in my collections?

If it’s something that would interest you, would you mind giving me your opinion on which you’d like to see released first? It would really help me to gauge whether there is enough interest to do this (and obviously, which design should be first up).

You can refresh your memory on the different designs here, and you can pick multiple answers in the poll below.

Thanks so much friends, i really really appreciate your input :)

[poll:8]

ps. stay tuned because there’s a lot of fun stuff coming up this week on the blog, including the tutorial for how to make my jersey maxi skirt (seen here and here), and then we’ll have a chat about what this was all about.

Yes! I vote yes a bunch of times over. I’ve never emailed to ask about it because I thought it might be rude. One of my favorite things about sewing is picking out my own fabric for each project, so I love the idea of making the jewel sea skirt (for example) in multiple colors! I hope this happens. When I get preggers down the line, I look forward to making a bunch of those pieces from your designs, but for my body type now they really don’t work!

I just want to say that I really really want the Kelly skirt. Its no longer available though. I’ve attempted to draft it myself but I’m a perfectionist and I don’t really have enough sewing time to figure it out. Please please please release it as a pattern. I love you blog and I’m inspired by your can do self starting attitude. I’ve only been sewing for a year now and my goal is to learn to draft my own patterns. Until then I’d love to use your patterns!!!

i understand why you’re hesistant to selling your patterns, but if you decide to do it, i’m definitely buying!

i love all your designs are there are a few that i would be very interested in seeing as patterns and giving my best shot at!

and i second Leanna, the Matilda Bay dress is absolutely darling and i’d love to be able to have/make one of those as well!

Oh I would love that! I tried to vote for more then one but it wouldn’t let me so I thought I’d just say I need to start sewing my fall and winter wardrobe if that helps.

Oh no, if you sell the patterns for the garments in your collections, I will spend all of my money on them!
But seriously, I’m a huge fan and I sew, so it would be GREAT to have these patterns!

Yesssssss I would love that! I haven’t visited your site in a while, but I’m amazed by your collections!
My favorites are Matilda Bay and Banksia :)
Whatever decision you make, I’m looking forward to your next creation!
Also, silly question: how come you don’t have a pattern number 7? That new beautiful skirt is number 8 already!

Aaaaaah yesss oops! Lulu totally slipped my mind, even though I have it! :)
Well, no matter how much they get out of order, it’s smart that you’re numbering them anyway ;)

I would love to have available any dress or skirt pattern. I love your designs but I don’t like to show my knees and so would love to make the skirts and dresses little longer.

oh, I love the idea of this! I’ve loved your Branby skirt (and darling ranges dress, too) but wanted it in another color rather than the denim.

I do understand your hesitation, certainly, but if you do decide to sell them, I would buy. I’m already looking at your maternity line too!

Hi, I’ve only just discovered you and I think your designs are gorgeous. Yes, please do bring out more patterns. I’d love the Brumby skirt and Wattle cardigan. The Eucalypt tank too. I’ve just bought the Darling Ranges dress and can’t wait to make it…!
