happy new year!

January 2nd, 2014

Just a quick hi today to say happy new year!!

We move house in a few days, so i’ve been spending my time packing up our house (so excited!!). Which really means, that i’ve been taking 10 times longer than i should as i linger over every nostalgic photo, memory and piece of tiny baby clothing hehehe

Wishing you all the best for a wonderful 2014!

Megan Nielsen baby bump

Well my darlings, here’s my BIG BIG news for the year!

I’m expecting baby number 3!!!

I’m 13 weeks along (so 3 months pregnant), and i’m due May 4th 2014.

Yes – we are crazy freaking excited! So much happy dancing. Completely and utterly over the moon to be expanding our family. Chris and I adore Bunny and Buddy so much that we couldn’t think of anything better than adding to our little brood :)

I’ve been pretty thrilled with the kids responses – they have been so sweet, so excited, so full of love for a sibling they haven’t even met yet. But we should have known they’d be that way, because they are darlings. They’ve been baby crazy for the last year, and pretty much pounce on any baby within touching distance (This has gotten a tad embarrassing at school pick up…).

So my dear friends – here i am in my growing bump glory! amazing how quickly it pops out when you’re on to baby three, my goodness hehehe

Ok i’m off to rest up – as per usual morning sickness has knocked me for the count.

Love and hugs to you all my dears!

Right now the patterns available as PDF’s are:

I’ve prioritized based on what patterns people are having the hardest time finding :) I’ll slowly add more patterns as time goes on. And of course, printed patterns are still available through our lovely stockists.

bunny turns 5

Bunny turns 5

So my little girl turned 5.

Wow. that happened. It’s kind of blown my mind really. 5 years is such a long time – and it really brought home to me that she’s a kid now – a big kid!

We did this little photoshoot with her for her birthday party invite – and i just couldn’t resist sharing it here – because well, it’s just so Bunny. If pictures could properly portray a persons personality, these would come pretty close. She’s a bundle of joy that kid. Funny, sweet, brave, thoughtful, smart – all rolled up in cute.

Though it makes me so sad to see my kids growing up – it’s just beautiful to see our relationships grow, and see their personalities bloom. I love that Bunny is a total firecracker, she’s loud and crazy, but then she’s also quietly thoughtful and encouraging, and completely full of love. I’m incredibly grateful to be her mom.

[And since i'm a mom and my kid is a year older, i'm going to photo dump birthday party pictures -YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED hehehe]

hey hey! i’m back!

July 8th, 2013

hey hey i'm back

Hey friends!!

Thank you so much for all of your kind words, encouragement and unbelievably thoughtful support in my last post. It’s been a really weird month for me, and I was so touched by all of your comments and emails, and am so grateful for all the understanding. I haven’t had a chance to respond to everyone yet, as I tried really hard to just unplug from the computer – but I promise I will. You guys are the best!

After my rest I’m really happy to report that my ulcer has cleared up (albeit slowly), and I’m feeling much healthier and dare I say, normal. It’s been hard training myself into normal sleep patterns, and remembering to eat properly – but I think I’ve been doing well! I read a lot of books, baked up a storm, relearnt to watch TV, did a lot of fun little embroidery projects that kept me on a couch for a while, and even tackled a few sewing projects for friends and my darling kiddos. It’s going to sound silly, but I can’t even believe how different I feel right now – I haven’t used caffeine as a crutch, because I no longer have that constant feeling of exhaustion nagging at me all day – and I generally feel much more alert and energetic. I guess sleep and nutrition really are important hehehe

I think stepping back has been really beneficial to me. It allowed me to see things a bit more clearly, and assess where my life is at right now.

And basically, I need to slow down.

SO what does that mean? I’m going to do my best to reduce my workload so that I don’t make myself sick again. As a start, I’ll only be selling my patterns wholesale to retail stores, and they won’t be available directly through my site to the general public anymore. I know that might be a real bummer for you, if you really enjoy purchasing directly through me, but unfortunately it’s just too much having both sides of the business going at full steam right now. The good news is, my patterns are stocked in over 45 stores all over the world! So if you’re wanting to find patterns, the stockists page on my website is the best place to start. They’re all wonderful stores with lovely people behind them, and I highly recommend every single one.

With respect to blogging, I will continue to blog – but just at a slower less consistent rate. Design Diary began as a place for me to document my designs and what I create, and it will always be that for me. I know I still want to share what I’m making and designing, and I can’t imagine a time where I won’t want to do that.

So that’s where I’m at right now ! I hope you’ll all understand – and thanks again for being the most wonderful customers and readers ever.

Big hugs darlings!

[Update: a couple of people have emailed me asking about pattern packs, right now the only pattern packs i have available are on Amazon, and there are a handful left. I don't think i'll be doing more packs once they're gone. Here are the links: Breakwater pack, Maternity survival pack, Nursing survival pack]

the reality check

June 8th, 2013

Megan Nielsen

As a reader of my blog, you probably know by now that I’m a really hard worker. I’ve never been one to sleep in, begin work at 10, take long lunches and leave at 4. No. I like to get things done, as many things as I can. I’m up super early, and in bed super late. I don’t take breaks, pretty much ever. I’ll fill in every minute of every day with “things that need to get done”.

And finally, this week, that kind of behavior caught up with me. I had the reality check.

After feeling off colour for almost a month I finally went to the doctor – and found that I have an ulcer. He gave me a talking to about my unhealthy lifestyle, and he was 100% right. I am run down. I live unhealthily. I don’t sleep well, I don’t eat well, and I certainly don’t have any balance.

It will get better, and go away if I rest – but if I keep pushing (as I’m prone to doing), it will get worse.

There are moments in your life where you’re given the opportunity to do the right thing, and at this moment, I know the right thing is to take a good rest, and get better. Even if i don’t like it.

I struggle with this, because I know myself, and I know the second I put my backside on a couch I will feel a wave of guilt and laziness. But I know it needs to be done.

And the idea of taking a break so soon after releasing my new collection scares me – but I always try and make my decisions first as a mother, before I consider the business side of things. And I know this is the right thing for my family. I can’t look after anyone if I’m not healthy, and I haven’t been healthy in a while.

So my dear friends after that incredibly rambling mind dump – I am just here today to let you know that I’ll be taking a month off to rest, recoup and get better.

Please don’t feel worried though – I will be back in a few weeks, this is just a holiday – and though patterns won’t be available through my store for a few weeks, you will still be able to find your favourite sews via my lovely stockists

Thanks for understanding.

Love and hugs! Meg XOXO
